New Hybrid Hot Water Heater

GE first to announce water heaters that will meet new DOE ENERGY STAR® standards

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – In the wake of the Department of Energy’s announcement today that creates ENERGY STAR® criteria for residential water heaters, GE is proud to introduce two innovative products that will meet the new requirements. The GE Hybrid Electric Water Heater and GE Tankless Gas Water Heater, both currently in development, represent the latest in a series of GE appliances designed to help energy efficiency in the home.

The DOE’s new ENERGY STAR program, for heat pump water heaters and tankless water heaters, is the result of many months of analysis of technologies, market opportunities and consumer interest.

GE was one of the key participants in the criteria-development process and urged the DOE to adopt aggressive standards for high-efficiency ENERGY STAR water heaters.

ENERGY STAR standards are important because second only to residential heating and cooling, home water heating is number one in residential energy consumption. Even as homes are designed to be more energy-efficient, the percentage of energy used in water heating is still a predominant factor.

GE Hybrid Water Heaters

The new industry-exclusive GE Hybrid Electric Water Heater is designed to provide the same hot water homeowners are accustomed to, but requires only about half the energy to produce it. For example, based on the same standard tank water heater that uses approximately 4800 kWh per year, the new GE Hybrid Electric Water Heater is designed to:

• Use less than half of that energy – or about 2300 kWh per year– a savings of approximately 2500 kWh per year.
• Save approximately $250 per year— that's $2,500 savings in energy costs over a 10-year period based on 10 cents per kWh.

The GE Hybrid Electric Water Heater combines energy-saving heating technology with traditional electric heating systems used in most standard water heaters on the market today without sacrificing the amount of hot water it can deliver.

This hybrid technology is designed to absorb heat in ambient air and transfer it into the water. Since it requires much less energy to absorb and transfer heat than it does to generate it – as a standard electric water heater would – the GE Hybrid Electric Water Heater provides the same amount of hot water while using less energy.

The GE Hybrid Electric Water Heater features a user-friendly electronic control system that offers both simplicity and flexibility, giving consumers as much or as little control of operating modes as they like: Set the thermostat and forget it or easily change the desired water temperature to maximize energy benefits.

Target availability is the fourth quarter of 2009. The GE Hybrid Electric Water Heater is designed for easy installation because it uses the existing water and electrical connections and occupies the same footprint as a traditional tank water heater, making it perfect for new construction or a replacement upgrade.

GE Tankless Gas Water Heater Eliminates the Hassles

GE also has a solution for consumers who use gas water-heating systems. The new GE Tankless Gas Water Heater provides hot water while using less energy than a standard-tank gas water heater because it only activates when you need hot water and it immediately de-activates when you turn off the water. This demand-activated technology allows users to receive a continuous supply of hot water.

Demand-activated technology also translates into significant energy savings. A GE tankless gas water heater could help homeowners save up to 25 percent annually on water heating costs compared to the operating costs of a standard 40-gallon-tank gas water heater.

The GE Tankless Gas Water Heater is offered in two sizes (7.5-gallon-per-minute flow and 9.4-gallon-per-minute flow), indoor and outdoor. The 7.5-gallon-per-minute flow is available for natural gas; the 9.4-gallon-per-minute flow is available for natural gas or LP gas.

Contractor killed in trench collapse

Rescue workers pulled Ismael's body from beneath five feet of dirt piled in the collapsed  sewer trench at a Habitat for Humanity home on 7th Street off Cleveland Avenue.

Ismael, a plumber, was buried for almost four hours.

"With the rain that we had, it was a classic collapse," said Dave Rhodes, a battalion chief with Atlanta Fire and Rescue.. "Working in these conditions there's a danger of a spoil pile," when dirt removed from digging collapses back into the hole being dug.

He said the dirt weighed about 3,000 pounds per cubic yard "and we removed about 32 cubic yards of dirt."

Ismael fell into the nine-foot trench around 4 p.m., said Atlanta Fire and Rescue spokesman Bill May. Another unidentified man also fell into the gulch but was pulled out before rescue workers arrived at the scene. He was unharmed.

Jasmine Ford, a neighbor, was at home when the collapse happened.

"One of his co-workers came over and asked for a shovel," Ford said. "He was frantic."

She said a crew of four to seven contractors were working on the trench before the collapse.

"Guys were trying to dig him out by hand," said another neighbor, Everett Cooper.

Rhodes said investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were on scene to determine whether the work being done met safety regulations.

"There was no shoring," Rhodes said, referring to either wooden planks or steel plates used to hold back the earth while digging trenches.

Sydney Water Wise

SYDNEY PROVES IT’S WATER WISE

Three months since the NSW Government introduced new Water Wise Rules ending drought

restrictions, Greater Sydney continues to be water wise, Minister for Water, Phil Costa said

today.

Minister Costa said an initial assessment of water supplied to Sydney Water since the NSW

Government announced Water Wise Rules three months ago shows an increase of just 1.3 per

cent.

“Despite having one of the warmest winters on record Greater Sydney continues to conserve

water since Water Wise Rules replaced drought restrictions,” Mr Costa said.

“In the last three months our preliminary figures show 118.6 gigalitres of water was supplied by

the Sydney Catchment Authority to Sydney Water - up just 1.5 gigalitres from the same period

last year.

"The community has shown a terrific understanding of how precious our water is, and the days of

wasting water are behind us.

“Water Wise Rules were introduced to provide a common sense blueprint for water use for

households to follow, ending five years of tough but necessary drought restrictions.

“The total water consumed by Sydney is now similar to the early 1970s, despite a population

increase of about 1.3 million.

“By using water wisely we will be able to save 24 per cent of Sydney's water needs by 2015.

“The new rules give people more flexibility to maintain their gardens and manage water around

the home, and reinforce the importance of using water responsibly to minimise waste.

“Businesses such as nurseries and landscaping companies are now automatically exempted and

will no longer need to apply for exclusion from the rules. “

Water Wise Rules came into effect on the 22 June 2009 for residents of Sydney, the Blue

Mountains and Illawarra. Fines of $220 for individuals and $550 for businesses apply for

breaches.

The new Water Wise Rules allow:

Hand-held hoses, sprinklers and watering systems on any day before 10am and after

4pm. Hand-held hoses must be fitted with a trigger nozzle when watering

Children may play under the sprinkler on a hot day

Washing vehicles using a trigger nozzle

Fire hoses for fire-fighting only

No hosing of hard surfaces except for health and safety purposes or emergency and

construction activities

Automatic exclusion for nurseries, market gardeners, landscapers, garden contractors,

bowling greens, cricket wickets, golf tees and croquet, hockey, tennis and racing

surfaces.

Previous Level 3 restrictions included:

Hand held watering only on Wednesdays and Sundays before 10am and after 4pm –

watering systems and sprinklers are banned.

Permits are required to fill new swimming pools and special permits must be obtained

by outdoor businesses and community and sporting groups who maintain facilities.

No hosing of hard surfaces

“On Wednesday I advised Sydney’s residents will be able to wash down their houses, driveways

and cars to help clean following the dust storm,” Mr Costa said.

“This is allowed under the Water Wise Rules as high concentrations of dust can cause respiratory

problems and has health implications for people with asthma and breathing difficulties.

“I congratulate Sydney for once again taking up the challenge to be water wise - building on a

decade of success in achieving water savings.”

Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Have Just Left It Alone

Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Have Just Left It The Way It Was...

10) Because the archenemy of "Good Enough" is "Better."
Patrick12 of Okinawa, Japan

9) Because I am getting tired of hearing my wife say, "I told you so...."
atwinparadox2 of Pennsylvania

8) Because of the five new ‘frags’ that I never wanted.
mkbtank of North East Philadelphia

7) "I just have to move that one out into the light, just a little bit more... oops! there it goes... Right into the intake. {expletive}!!!!!
Puffster of Ravenna, Ohio

6) You wake up, look at the tank, and decide: "I'll move that rock 1/4" that way." Then you think, "I'll just spin this one around a little bit..." Two hours later, all of your live rock is in a bucket. Two more hours pass, and your live rock is right back the way it started, and you missed all your classes for the day!
Joe-ness of Schooled in Philadelphia

5) Because yesterday my ph was 8.1. After "adjusting" my calcium reactor, it's 7.0 - and I wonder why my fish are having trouble breathing.
Saulsa of Regions Unknown

4) I wanted to save money by heating my 240-gallon reef with a natural gas water heater (to save about $25 per month)... and that ended up costing around $2000 in damages from using the wrong type of PEX-to-PVC fitting. Ouch!
Zachtos of Michigan, Mt. Pleasant

3) Re-aquascaping translated into reefing terms means death and destruction will come: Dropping a large rock and breaking the glass on the bottom of your tank. True story.
Cmondo of Brokenville, Delaware

2) Because I wanted to move one small piece of rock and I ended up having to cancel my Valentine's Day dinner with my wife to re-do my entire rockscape. A month later and I still haven't lived that one down, if you know what I mean.
HaleMoana of West Chester, Pennsylvania

1) A couple of years ago, I had an idea that it would be nice to one day have a reef aquarium. Looking at the last six months of my credit card statements, I should have just left it the way it was.

Nortiz Tankless

Noritz America called me last week; they are manufactures of tankless gas water heaters. They had executives arriving from Japan with an interest in visiting a Southern California construction site, primarily to look at the application of a Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) gas system. Because I train and certify CSST installers on location I got the phone call. I also represent State Water Heater including the Aurora model made by Noritz. The tankless gas water heater is finally catching on in America. The tank type gas water heater has been an affordable installation for generations, but the energy to maintain a vessel full of water is sometimes not the best household application.
Some issues to investigate when considering a tankless gas water heater...
Higher gas volume and pressure
Effects on the manufactures warranty if a recirculation line is installed
Flue/vent materials should be to the manufactures specifications
Sufficient (combustion) fresh air supply

A few features & benefits of tankless water heaters:
Continuous hot water on demand (tankless water heaters provide a steady flow of hot water whenever and wherever you need).
Compact, space saving design (indoor and outdoor tankless water heaters are just over 2 feet tall, weigh 55 pounds or less, and attach to an interior or exterior wall).
Energy efficient tankless gas water heaters are as the name implies very energy efficient $300 federal energy tax credit on some tankless gas water heaters qualify for tax credit incentives available for a limited time.

Features & Benefits tank type gas water heater:
Is best told in a short story.
Last week my good friend and Pastor was complaining about the cost of replacing his 8 year old 50 gallon gas water heater. Complete job $850.00. So we did some math...
8 years x 365 days = 2920 days $850 divided by 2920 days = $0.30 per day for dutiful appliance service whether you use it or not. Of course add the cost of natural gas necessary to maintain 50 gallons of water at a ready to use temperature of 115 degrees.

Now do some math with the $4000 wide screen TV or $45,000 SUV at less than 5 years service. The tank type gas water heater has always been an affordable appliance when installed correctly with the right application.
